 What is stitching of shifts?

Scenario 1: When the employees come to work for the mid-night shift and they punch out for break on the day they came to work (say Jan 1 at 23:45), but what if they come back from break at the early hours of the next day (say Jan 2 at 01:00)?? What do we do here as the hours before lunch would go to work done on Jan. 1 and after break will come under Jan. 2??
To avoid the above issue we have come up with the feature called Stitching of shifts. You can set up the logic (for the above example) by making the mid-night shift part of previous day if maximum hours between the 2 shifts is less than or equal to 2 hours. This can be done in Site settings (See the screenshot below).

Scenario 2: When the employees come to work for the mid-night shift at the last day of the pay period (say, Jan. 15) and punch in after break on (Jan.16) which is the first day of the new pay period, the Stitching of shifts comes into effect. This feature makes sure that the hours come to Jan. 15 for the work done by the employee and not to the next pay period.
